Nonstop coal train action on BNSF's Orin Subdivision featuring both BNSF and Union Pacific, shuttling sets of coal hoppers to and from the many mines of Wyoming's Powder River Basin. This line was a purpose built line was a joint venture between the BN and CNW, opened in 1979. It was built when a massive deposit of low-sulfur coal was found, which is better than coal mined in other places for power generation. The area quickly became, and still is, the largest coal producing region in the United States, making over double the production than the second place area. This line sees almost exclusively coal trains from both the BNSF and UP, however on occasion, a BNSF roadswitcher, and spillover traffic from the BNSF Casper Subdivision will take the line, however in this video only coal trains are featured. One thing of note is a UP coal train carrying empty hoppers, which carry sand into the basin that is used for fracking. Each coal train is over 100 cars long and carries over 17 thousand tons of coal! Thanks for watching!
