200,000 is the new 100,000. Vehicle life expectancy has changed. Why are we keeping cars longer? High mileage vehicles are now reaching 200,000 and 300,000 miles - sometimes more. Automobiles are more expensive, and people are keeping vehicles longer and driving them with more miles than any time in history. In this video, we talk about the average annual miles put on a car today vs in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s - as well as the lifespan of engines and transmissions in 1970 and 1980 compared to vehicles of today. Our 2009 Ford Expedition just passed 175,000 miles on the 5.4 Tritan engine. I did an oil change and will send the oil sample to Blackstone for analysis of the Amsoil High Mileage motor oil that we ran in this Ford engine for the past 10,000 miles. Cars are reaching higher mileage because of better engineering, better quality oils/lubricants, better maintenance and because owners are putting more miles on per year, and owning cars longer.
