Today I went in search for a pike on the kayak. I needed another pike for the sussex kayak fishing slam which I could measure (my last pike slipped out my fingers) I have wanted to visit the river Medway for a long time and today was the day I went. The weather was far from ideal. Shocking rain, strong winds and quite frankly miserable conditions. But I was determined. I set off from home at 5:30AM and arrived around 7am. I was greeted by the very friendly lock keeper, I paid my boat registration and parking and got cracking. The first hour I spent getting to grips with the lures and surroundings. Trolled through the town centre with no luck. I then went further up river and a small perch grabbed my lure. I watched out for bait fish jumping out. I saw some jumping out and put on a size 5 mepps spinner. These silvery flashing lures never fail (Usually). A few casts later and bang we were in. Pike on. A small jack but one which was measured and returned. Target achieved. Although I still wanted a double figure one. I tried trolling again for a big girl but none fancied my lures. It was therefore decided that I stick with my mepps spinner and cast longways along the margins. Steaming my boat all 4 miles until the next lock. The day was steady. Catching more jacks, and perch. One of the pike wasn’t a jack and came in at 66cm, which was great as it meant more points for the slam. The day was throughly enjoyed. I was due to stay the night and fish Sunday. However 2 things ruined it. A migraine that developed throughout the day (forgot my drink) and a lovely phone call from NHS track and trace, Someone had kindly given my name and number and now I’m having to self isolate for 4 days. Bugger. That’s my annual leave ruined. But at least I got my pike today and a half decent one. Can’t wait to get back and try for a double. Enjoy the pics. The video will be out tomorrow evening (plenty of time to edit now 🙄)
