Pipeaway Walks: Kathu Shrine Street Procession At Phuket Vegetarian Festival Kathu Shrine, where the Phuket Vegetarian Festival was born 199 years ago, leads an early-morning procession through the streets of Phuket Town, Thailand. From the temple to Saphan Hin, it is a 10-kilometer-long walk both ways, practically a religious half-marathon. Over 200 "ma song" spirit mediums, believed to be possessed by the Nine Emperor Gods, walk barefoot on this route, blessing the locals. Many pierce their cheeks and bodies with sharp objects, carrying everything from iron rods to fire extinguishers. They believe that, by undergoing these radical self-mortification rituals, they will take away the misfortunes of others. Devotees led by the mediums parade the images of gods through the community that welcomes them with makeshift altars with fruit, sweets, tea, incense sticks and flower offerings, but also an extreme amount of firecrackers.
