During the Second World War, there were a huge number of concentration camps set up by the Nazis. The first camp that was opened was Dachau and over the course of its time in operation over 180,000 prisoners passed through the barbed wire fence. Over 41,000 prisoners never made it out of Dachau alive, and there was a reign of terror established inside of the camp by the SS. The guards were taught to inflict violence and beatings on prisoners, and there was also a number of other torture methods applied onto the inmates. At Dachau executions took place on a daily basis in the roll call yards, and also a firing range was used nearby. Standing cells were also used in which prisoners were locked in tiny cells for days on end, like an oubliette and they could not even sit down. Also there was pole hangings used, as well as floggings and whippings. Prisoners were worried by the violent nature of the guards, and many were worried that each day their day would be their last. When Dachau was liberated, thousands of disease ridden prisoners were found and there were reprisals carried out where the American soldiers executed SS guards.
