Official Ninja Nerd Website: https://ninjanerd.org Ninja Nerds! In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy will guide you through the anatomy and physiology of the cochlea, with a focus on the spiral organ of Corti. We will begin by reviewing the structural organization of the cochlear duct, including the scala vestibuli, scala media, and scala tympani, as well as the role of the basilar and tectorial membranes in auditory function. You will learn how the organ of Corti is arranged with inner and outer hair cells, supporting cells, and their association with the auditory nerve fibers. We will then explore the detailed mechanism of sound transduction, discussing how traveling waves along the basilar membrane cause specific regions to resonate depending on sound frequency. The deflection of stereocilia against the tectorial membrane opens mechanically gated ion channels, leading to depolarization, neurotransmitter release, and activation of the cochlear branch of cranial nerve VIII. This process allows for precise pitch discrimination and sound encoding by the brain. Finally, we will integrate these concepts to understand how the spiral organ of Corti plays a central role in translating mechanical sound vibrations into electrical impulses, forming the foundation for our sense of hearing.
