We will then explore the detailed mechanism of sound transduction, discussing how traveling waves along the basilar membrane cause specific regions to resonate depending on sound frequency. The deflection of stereocilia against the tectorial membrane opens mechanically gated ion channels, leading to depolarization, neurotransmitter release, and activation of the cochlear branch of cranial nerve VIII. This process allows for precise pitch discrimination and sound encoding by the brain. Finally, we will integrate these concepts to understand how the spiral organ of Corti plays a central role in translating mechanical sound vibrations into electrical impulses, forming the foundation for our sense of hearing.
