The patellar joint consists of the patella and the trochlea, and the patella has two surfaces. There are three main functions of the patella: to provide a longer lever arm for the quadriceps, to decrease the coefficient of friction, and to stabilize the knee joint. Patellar instability can be classified into three types: acute traumatic type, chronic hyperlaxity type, and arthritic type. Investigation of patellar instability can be done through X-ray, MRI, and CT scan.
