In this video, 7th-grade AVID students demonstrate how to use Philosophical Chairs, an activity/technique/discussion format that helps students... 1) increase their understanding of an issue 2) gives students a fun way to express their views by taking a side in a debate style format 3) teaches students to support their points with evidence 4) encourages students to think critically, listen carefully, and speak politely. TIPS: HOW TO USE PHILOSOPHICAL CHAIRS IN YOUR CLASS: Start the activity by taking an idea that needs to be discussed further (e.g., a class rule, a reading topic, etc.). Then give students related texts to read. Remind them to use the reading process/critical reading strategies as they read (e.g., previewing the article before reading, questioning, predicting, marking the text, writing in the margins, summarizing, etc.). When the class is ready to start Philosophical Chairs, review some ground rules to ensure students take turns speaking and show respect to each other (see video) and decide who will moderate the activity to make sure rules are followed. At the end of the activity (time limits will vary depending on students, issue, and situation), wrap things up and have students assess how things went (see video for possible evaluation questions.)
