Now in its 38th year, the AFI European Union Film Showcase (December 3–21) continues its tradition of bringing the best in European cinema to Washington, DC-area audiences. This year's selection includes 56 films representing all 27 EU member states, including award winners, regional box-office hits, debut works by up-and-coming talents and new works by leading auteurs, plus 18 of the top contenders for this year’s Academy Award® for Best International Feature Film and eight U.S. premieres. This year’s Showcase opens on December 3 with Paolo Sorrentino’s LA GRAZIA (Italy), a parable-like tale of parliamentary politics and difficult decisions. The Closing Night selection is THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE (UK), the wildly ambitious third feature from filmmaker Mona Fastvold (co-writer of THE BRUTALIST), a portrait of one of early America’s most enigmatic spiritual figures, with Amanda Seyfried delivering a career-defining performance as Ann Lee. Additional highlights include several eagerly anticipated new works from some of Europe’s best-known filmmakers, including a special 35mm screening of Oscar® winner László Nemes’ (SON OF SAUL) post-WWII family drama ORPHAN; Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne’s (THE CHILD; TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT) social-realist story YOUNG MOTHERS, which won the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival; Ildikó Enyedi’s (MY 20TH CENTURY, ON BODY AND SOUL) sensual, mind-expanding meditation on the natural world, SILENT FRIEND; Romanian auteur provocateur Radu Jude’s (BAD LUCK BANGING OR LOONY PORN) two genre-busting, politically minded comedies, DRACULA and KONTINENTAL ’25; and DUSE, Pietro Marcello’s (MARTIN EDEN, SCARLET) lavish biopic of legendary Italian actress Eleonora Duse, featuring Valeria Bruni Tedeschi in an awe-inspiring performance.
