Chant: “Pater noster (Vocal)” by the Dominican Friars of the Holy Trinity Convent in Cracow («Alma Redemptoris», ℗ 2009 Gregorian Chant about the Mother of God) “Et ait illis: Cum oratis, dicite: Pater, sanctificetur nomen tuum. Adveniat regnum tuum.” (‘And He said to them, When you are praying, say, Father, may your name be kept holy. May your kingdom come.’) – Luke 11:1-2 The “Pater Noster” (‘Our Father,’ or the Lord's Prayer, in english), is a central prayer in Christianity, taught by Jesus to His disciples, likely in Aramaic. The prayer is recorded in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, both in Koine Greek (“Πάτερ ἡμῶν”), with slight variations between the two accounts. In the Gospel of Matthew, it’s part of the Sermon on the Mount, while in Luke, it’s given in response to a disciple’s request for instruction on prayer. Early latin translations of the Greek and Hebrew texts, and later, the St. Jerome's Latin Vulgate, provided a more standardised Latin version of the Bible, which included this prayer. The early Church Fathers and Doctors emphasised the importance of this prayer in Christian life and worship. For instance, St. Augustine referred to the “Pater Noster” as the “most perfect of prayers,” because it encompasses all the elements necessary for a complete and proper prayer. In his letter to Proba, he explained that this prayer includes praise for God's holiness, the desire for His kingdom to come, the request for daily sustenance, the plea for forgiveness, and the appeal for deliverance from evil. By incorporating these aspects, it serves as a comprehensive model of personal and communal prayer for Christians, aligned with God's will, as well as a concise summary of the Gospel. “Orantes autem, nolite multum loqui, sicut ethnici. Putant enim quod in multiloquio suo exaudiantur. Nolite ergo assimilari eis. Scit enim Pater vester, quid opus sit vobis, antequam petatis eum.” (‘And when praying, do not choose many words, as the pagans do. For they think that by their excess of words they might be heeded. Therefore, do not choose to imitate them. For your Father knows what your needs may be, even before you ask him.’) – Matthew 6:7-8 Painting: “Sermon on the Mount” (detail), by Henrik Olrik (19th century) Song Source: • Pater Noster (Vocal)
