A statue honoring the life of a man whose 1954 assassination served as a tipping point in the fight against organized crime in Phenix City now looks over the very spot he was fatally shot. The life-sized bronze statue of Albert Love Patterson sits on a city bench and faces the Coulter Building on 5th Avenue in Phenix City, Alabama. Patterson was fatally shot June 18, 1954 in the parking lot next to the building that housed his law office. The project was spearheaded by the Russell County/Phenix City Bicentenniel Committee to mark Alabama’s bicentennial. “We think it’s a great way to tell our history, it’s a great way for a visitor or citizen to have a conversation with Albert Patterson,” said David White, vice chancellor of the Phenix City campus at Troy University.
