India's Stray Dog Crisis: Supreme Court Order Sparks Debate on Shelters & Relocation | India Today

The clash between public safety and animal rights is at the centre of national attention following the Supreme Court's latest orders on India's stray dog crisis. The top court's full order directs authorities to build 5,000 dog shelters within eight weeks, clear localities of stray dogs, and ensure children and the elderly are protected. The order also states there must be no cruelty or mistreatment at the shelters. The matter will now be taken up by a larger three-judge bench. Animal lovers demand government bodies be pulled up for failing sterilisation drives and that relocation be halted until proper facilities are ready. Concerns have been raised about the previous order creating more problems due to lack of infrastructure. The court's Monday order stated: "In no circumstances should these stray dogs, after their relocation, be once again released back into the streets. Proper records must be maintained."
