Commando (戦場の狼, Senjō no Ōkami – “Wolf of the Battlefield”) is a 1985 vertical scrolling run-and-gun shooter developed and published by Capcom. As one of the pioneers of the military shooter genre, Commando laid the foundation for classics like Ikari Warriors, Gun.Smoke, Rambo: First Blood Part II, and Jackal. In the Atari 7800 version, players step into the boots of a fearless soldier dropped into hostile territory, armed only with a submachine gun and a limited supply of grenades. The gameplay is intense and straightforward: move upward through enemy-filled battlefields, shooting in eight directions while dodging relentless gunfire. Grenades can clear groups of enemies or destroy obstacles, making them essential for survival. Each level culminates in a fierce standoff at an enemy fortress, where waves of soldiers rush out to defend their base. The player’s skill, timing, and precision are key to surviving and advancing. Developed by legendary Capcom designer Tokuro Fujiwara, who also created Ghosts 'n Goblins, Commando became a global success and one of the titles that put Capcom on the gaming map. It helped define the run-and-gun genre and inspired an entire wave of military-themed shooters during the 1980s and 1990s. The Atari 7800 port captures the spirit of the arcade original, featuring fast-paced action, clean visuals, and responsive controls. Its legacy as the “grandfather of modern shoot ’em ups” remains undeniable. Commando isn’t just a game — it’s a piece of gaming history that changed the way action was played. #vaultofpixels #atari #atari7800 #commando Playlist: • Atari -- 7800
