The first stop on our North Sulawesi adventure, Bunaken Island. A protected national park, this area is close to the centre of the Coral Triangle and is home to 390 species of coral as well as countless varieties of sealife. Covering around 890 square kilometres, Bunaken National Park was established in 1991 however was still subject to blast fishing and coral mining into the 2000's. WWF supports conservation in the area and has been successful in reducing these practices. While the No Trash Triangle Initiative has worked to reduce plastic pollution in the national park by installing barriers in the rivers in nearby Manado, currents inevitably still bring quite a bit of plastic to Bunaken's shores. Despite this, the underwater world of Bunaken National Park is a treasure to explore for both divers and snorkellers alike.
