Roaring River State Park, located in southwest Missouri, is one of the state’s most scenic and popular parks. Situated about 8 miles south of Cassville, it is approximately 60 miles west of Branson and 40 miles east of Bentonville, Arkansas, making it a convenient getaway for nature lovers from these cities. The park spans 4,294 acres and was established in 1928 when the land was donated to the state by Thomas Sayman, a St. Louis businessman. Roaring River itself is a first-magnitude spring, producing an average of 20.4 million gallons of water daily, which flows into a picturesque river that is home to an abundance of trout. One of the park’s main attractions is trout fishing, as it has one of Missouri’s three state-owned trout hatcheries, operated by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Anglers from all over visit the park for catch-and-release fishing and stocked trout fishing in designated zones. The park offers a variety of outdoor activities, including seven hiking trails, ranging from short, easy walks to more challenging routes that lead to stunning overlooks. The Fire Tower Trail provides scenic views and leads to an old fire tower, while the Deer Leap Trail offers a beautiful overlook of the hatchery and river. For visitors staying overnight, the park features a full-service lodge, cabins, a campground with RV sites, and primitive camping areas. The Emory Melton Inn & Conference Center provides comfortable accommodations, a restaurant, and event spaces. Additional facilities include picnic areas, playgrounds, and a swimming pool, making it a family-friendly destination. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species throughout the park. Roaring River State Park’s blend of natural beauty, rich history, and recreational opportunities make it a beloved destination for fishing, hiking, and relaxation in the Ozarks. BONUS INFORMATION Flyfishing on a River in a Wheelchair Episode #2 Take a quick tour of how easy it is to flyfish on this river from your wheelchair. There are not many places like this in the U.S. and I plan of finding all of them. In this episode we view the paths that get us to the concrete ADA Fishing Piers which sit out into the river so you can fish for the beautiful rainbow trout raised and released into this spring fed river. There is not a lot of brush or trees to deal with which makes it ideal for the wheelchair flyfisherman. I had a great time with my kids and grandkids on our day trip here and actually caught a nice 9” rainbow. If this place doesn’t make your wrist twitch then I don’t know what will.
