ingloriousbettas.com | Pygmy sunfish are gorgeous little US Native fish. They only get about an inch long and do very well in small, heavily planted tanks. They also have a fascinating courtship dance where the male twists and turns all of his little fins!! Although they are shy, you can strategically decorate the tank to create a territorial space for the male to dance in (and it also helps to avoid sudden movements next to the tank). Another slight difficulty is that they will only eat live food like baby brine shrimp, grindal worms, white worms, etc. Although prolific spawners, getting the minuscule fry past the first week or two can be tricky because they are so tiny. Make sure that there is enough infusoria (either in an established tank or on plants) for the young to feed on before they can take baby brine shrimp. The species I have is currently undescribed. It was collected by a friend of a friend and is referred to for right now as Elassoma sp. affinis evergladei Three Mile Creek, Elberta, Alabama.
