One year later I am back on the 600-yard firing line with the budget Savage Axis rifle. Let's see if the upgrades we made have improved performance and comfort. The original concept was to put together a long-range precision rifle for around $500 using only new, off-the-shelf components. I picked up a Savage Axis, tuned up the trigger, bedded the action to a Boyds Pro Varmint laminate stock, and topped it with a Weaver base and rings, holding a Simmons .44 Mag 6-24x44mm Mil-Dot scope. The rifle is chambered in 7mm-08 Remington, a very potent long-range and hunting cartridge. The rifle shot well, but it had some issues. The buttpad was much too thin, and it became painful to fire after ten rounds or so. The scope was not clear enough to keep group sizes small. Since then I have upgraded the Axis, dropping the Simmons scope in favor of a Falcon M18+ 4-18x44mm SFP scope with a B20 reticle. I replaced the base with an Evolution GunWorks (EGW) 20MOA base and Weaver 4-hole skeletonized aluminum rings. The recoil pad is a Pachmayr Decelerator. The upgrades significantly improved the comfort, range, and precision of the rifle at long distance. Tulsa Red Castle Gun Club hosts this 600-yard match every month during the warmer parts of the year. It's a competition of wind-reading skills, pitting competitors against constantly shifting, swirling winds.
