Goldsmiths' seminar by Prof. Frank Koppens from the Institute of Photonic Sciences. Two-dimensional materials have emerged as a novel toolbox to build new materials and devices atom-by-atom. By stacking and twisting 2D materials, new ways to control light and electrons at the atomic scale appear. The talk describes nano-optoelectronic devices and novel nanophotonic properties. In these, the limits of quantum light-matter interactions have been challenged by confining the optical field down to the length scale of single atoms. The talk also presents nano-optoelectronic studies on twisted bilayer graphene using scanning near-field optical microscopy. Twisted bilayer graphene near the magic angle exhibits strongly correlated phases, including superconductivity and a Mott-like insulating state. Several device applications, such as detectors for infrared and THz light are also discussed. The seminar was held on 25th March 2021. 🖥️ Check out our websites: https://linktr.ee/cumaterials
