Here's a blast from the past made for the 2009 Doc Challenge. It was great working with Dan Thornton, Gabril Miller and our subject, Doug Yule. From his place in rock history to his new band, Red Dog, and the work of building violins, Doug shares some lessons with us. The Violin Maker was made in five days for the 2009 International Documentary Challenge (docchallenge.org). We were given the genre of Biography. Our team of three, Dan Thornton, Gabriel Miller and Greg Brotherton, made this profile of a local violin maker with a deep resonance to his craft, Doug Yule. Chosen among the top 13 of over 140 submissions, the movie won best use of Biography/Character Study and was screened with the other finalists at the 2009 HotDocs Festival in Toronto and the Big Sky Documentary Festival. Since then, it screened at the 2009 Port Townsend Film Festival as part of the Docs for the Soul program. Now we'd like to share it with everyone.
