Carl Bean on lead. As written on the back of the album: Several years ago I was privileged to write notes for an album of gospel songs by The Gospel Chimes of Chicago. At that time the group included such gospel luminaries as James Cleveland, Jessy Dixon and Dorothy Norwood, all of whom have since gained rightful acclaim in the gospel hierarchy. When Richard Simpson, director of the religious series of Atlantic Records, asked me to write the notes for this album, I responded most enthusiastically because I had watched the progress of the Chimes and I was anxious to impart my obser- vations and commendations about this excellent aggregation of gospel singers. The Chimes, as this album so adequately illustrates, are singing better than ever. Under the careful and prodigious aegis of Imogene Greene, the group has replaced their illustrious graduates with equally talented lead singers and they are carrying on in their usual excellent style. Especially exciting to this writer is the newcomer Carl Beans' eloquent read- ing of the evergreen gospel ballad, When I've Done The Best I Can. His timing is naturally precise and his phrasing manifests ultimate conviction. Carl seems to have a genuine rapport with the lyric which can only be inspired by an intimate experience with his Lord and Saviour. On Miss Me, one of the several tracks on which Imogene Greene handles the lead chores, we recognize traditional gospel lyrics: "Wake me, shake me. Don't let me sleep too late, Tryin' to get to heaven in due time," which reminds me that one of the currently popular psychedelic (electronic rock and roll) groups is using the same lyric and melody and bass line in a recent chart-item. In spite of the novel incursion upon the lyrics, musical patterns, instrumental nuances, etcetera, of gospel music, the Chimes at least are holding their own. Unlike many gospel singing groups who seem to be confused by the rhythm and blues, psychedelic rock and jazz invasions across the borders of Gospeldom, the Chimes obviously have no problems in continuing to conduct business as usual. To friends of The Gospel Chimes we again present Imogene Greene, Lee Charles Neely, and Claude Timmons and introduce the newly added and welcome addi- tions, Andra McClellan and lead singer Carl Beans. I hope that you will be as enthusiastic about this impressive recording as I am and that it will give you as much soul satisfaction and genuine musical enjoy. ment as it has given me.
