Types of Drag & How They Work (Parasite Drag) - For Student Pilots

In this video, I talk about the 3 different types of parasite drag; form drag, interference drag, and skin friction drag. Form drag is dependent on the shape of the aircraft. This is what you think of when someone says something is aerodynamic... what they are really saying is that it has low amounts of form drag. Interference drag is caused by intersecting lines of flow. For instance, flow from the propeller may run into and interfere with flow over the wing, disturbing it and causing a form of drag. Skin friction drag can be seen at the microscopic level where air molecules get stuck to the tiny imperfections of the aircraft's skin. Inside this boundary layer, the air molecules are brought to a complete halt right at the surface of the aircraft skin.
