History Briefs: The Zimmermann Telegram: Why America entered the First World War

The sinking of the Lusitania is often cited as the reason for America's entry into the First World War. In fact it had little political impact. However, when British Intelligence uncovered a secret telegram sent from the German Foreign Minister, Arthur Zimmerman to their Ambassador in Mexico seeking to wage war against the United States, it generated both political and public demand for America to enter the war on the side of the Allies. The message in the telegram was sent using a secret code which the Germans called 0075. It was cracked by British Naval Intelligence. Later, the writer, Ian Fleming was to join British Naval Intelligence. Afterwards he started writing a book about a fictions spy and felt the character should have a code number. He remembered the 0075 code in the Zimmerman Telegram. However, on reflection, thinking that the number was a digit too long, he removed the 5 on the end and hence James Bond became 007.
