Global Plastic Surgery Panel: “Short Term Medical Missions and Surgical Capacity Building – Do Both Frameworks Coexist?" Date: Monday, June 15th Speakers: Amanda Gosman, MD, Chief, Division of Plastic Surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine and Director of Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery. Dr. Gosman has extensive experience providing health care and education to underserved communities around the world. She has successfully utilized telemedicine technology to overcome logistical barriers to international health care and education through ConnectMed International, a nonprofit organization that she founded in 2010 to provide free reconstructive surgeries and education to underserved communities around the world. She has also has received many awards for her commitment to improving the health care of children and adults in her community and around the world. She has served in many national leadership roles including the chair of the Ethics Committee for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Marc E. Walker MD, MBA is an Assistant Professor in Plastic Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He obtained his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and MBA from Harvard Business School before completing residency and a clinical fellowship in hand surgery and reconstructive microsurgery at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Walker has been extensively involved with international health organizations for 15+ years and has traveled throughout Central and South America pursuing this work. As a college student, he co-founded the undergraduate mission organization Vision del Mundo. During medical school, Dr. Walker lived abroad in Chile working with medical students from around the globe at Teleton Pediatric Orthopedic and Burn Rehabilitation Hospital and with the rural medical mission organization, Trabajo Servicio Rural, hosted by Universidad de Chile and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Most recently, Dr. Walker joined the Executive Leadership Board of the pediatric hand surgery mission organization, Hand Help, Inc., with whom he has traveled to Honduras, Nicaragua, and Peru providing free hand surgery and plastic surgery to children in need.
