Commemoration Marking 50th Anniversary of Founding of Tibet Autonomous Region Commences in Lhasa

China's commemorative celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Tibet Autonomous Region commenced Tuesday morning in front of the Potala Palace in Lhasa with the participation of over 20,000 Tibetan people from all walks of life. A 65-member Central Government Delegation led by China's top political advisor Yu Zhengsheng attended the ceremony followed by a colorful parade of over 6,000 people and nine decorated floats. At the beginning of the ceremony, Chinese Vice-Premier and member of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee Liu Yandong read a telegram of congratulations jointly sent by the Central Committee of Communist Party of China (CPC), Standing Committee of National People's Congress, State Council, National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the Central Military Commission. Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee unveiled the congratulatory plaque presented by the Central Government Delegation at the ceremony. The plague bears the inscription by Xi Jinping of the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, which reads "Strengthen national unity and build a beautiful Tibet". Yu also made a speech, congratulating the founding of the autonomous region on September 1, 1965, after the establishment of the regional People's Congress and the local legislature through elections.
