SINKING A WOODEN BOAT: Pros and Cons for carvel, clinker and strip planked boats

How did the sinking of a wooden boat called Sarah Anne come about? I'm into restoring and sailing old trailer boats. Right now I am in a change of seasons. We are handing Moonlight on to our children and grandchildren to enjoy, but the story took a new twist when I unexpectedly took possession of Sarah Ann several months back. She is the big sister to Moonlight. I'm on a mission to complete the restoration of Sarah Ann in the next few weeks and return her to Tasmania. I had hoped to take her for a sail before the 2000 km trip South, but I ran out of time. You may be wondering why I decided to stick with the original name for Sarah Ann? I had planned to rename her "Claire de Lune" which is French for moonlight. This seemed appropriate enough as she is in a way a big sister to Moonlight, my 12 ft clinker dinghy. But it turns out that there is a story behind the naming of Sarah Ann that makes her worthy of retaining the name. Sarah Ann, was a 66 ft ketch weighing 45 tons, built on the Huon River, Tasmania, by John Burke in 1874. She spent her early years in the Huon-Hobart timber trade but from 1886 onwards she often traded up and down the Tasmanian east coast and as far North as Launceston. Sarah Ann sailed from Launceston bound for Hobart on 21 April 1893 with a cargo of grain. She would have sailed past Gravelly Beach, the town we are relocating to in 5 weeks time. She cleared Tamar Heads at 9 am on the 23rd, but failed to arrive. Two other vessels reported seeing Sarah Ann in the vicinity of Tasman Head on 25 April during a south-westerly gale, and it was thought the vessel may have capsized soon afterwards. Then in July a party of hunters on Schouten Island reported finding the wreck of a vessel under the cliffs at Hen & Chickens Bay. The remains of her only boat, a small punt, were found on the rocks with other wreckage, but there wasn't any trace of the crew of five or the passenger she was carrying.
