I was Shocked How This Hidden Gem was Seoul’s Execution Ground

I was so happy to discover this neighborhood in Seoul. It’s small and somewhat hidden behind Seoul Station. Not many people explore this side of the station. Most stick to the east near Namdaemun Market or Huam-dong. But this place is a must. It has a bit of everything. The oldest Western-style church in Korea, an epic-looking apartment complex, old and new shops, restaurants, and espresso bars. I may have had my favorite seolleongtang here. The handmade shoe street was fun to explore, but the biggest surprise was Seosomun History Park, once an official execution ground during the Joseon Dynasty. Somehow, all of these places connect. To me, it was the perfect day trip. 서울에서 이 동네를 발견했을 때 정말 기뻤어요. 서울역 뒤편에 작게 숨어 있는 곳인데, 이쪽을 찾는 분들은 많지 않습니다. 대부분은 남대문시장이나 후암동이 있는 서울역 동쪽에 가시거든요. 하지만 이곳은 꼭 가보셔야 할 곳입니다. 없는 게 없어요. 한국에서 가장 오래된 서양식 교회와 영화 속에 나올 법한 아파트 단지, 오래된 가게와 새로운 상점들, 식당과 에스프레소 바까지 모두 모여 있습니다. 이곳에서 인생 설렁탕을 맛보기도 했고요. 수제화 거리를 둘러보는 것도 재미있었지만, 가장 인상 깊었던 곳은 서소문 역사공원이었습니다. 조선시대 공식 처형장이었던 곳입니다. 흥미로운 점은 이 모든 장소들이 하나로 연결되어 있습니다. 저에게는 완벽한 하루 여행이었습니다.
