AIMS To facilitate structured reflection after an activity, helping teams learn from experience by comparing what was supposed to happen with what actually happened—without blame. HOW An AAR is not about fault-finding—it’s about understanding why things happened and how to improve for next time. A successful AAR: Focuses on why things happened, not just what happened. Encourages trust, openness, and honest discussion. Looks at team performance, not individual mistakes. Uses specific questions to direct learning. REMEMBER • No blame, no personal attacks—this is about learning. • Use a neutral facilitator to guide the discussion. • Run the AAR as soon as possible—fresh memories = better insights. • Ask targeted questions—broad questions lead to vague answers. FACILITATION PROCESS Step 1 (5 min): Set the Tone & Rules • Show the video. Step 2 (5 min): IN DUOS: Define the Intended Outcome • Ask: “What was supposed to happen? What did you want to do/try/apply when we were at the end of our first module?” • Clarify the original plan or objectives. Step 3 (5 min): Compare to Reality • Ask: “What actually happened?” (don’t talk about WHY yet) • Discuss specific events, decisions, and outcomes. Step 4 (10 min): Analyze the Gap • Ask: • “Why was there a difference?” • “What worked even better than planned?” • “What didn’t go as expected?” • Keep it constructive—focus on patterns, not people. Step 5 (5 min): Lessons & Future Actions • Ask: • “What would we do differently next time?” • “How can we apply what we learned?” • “What should we keep doing?” Interact with Patrick Stahl on social media: https://linktr.ee/patrickstahl Connect with Leadership ARTS: / leadership-arts https://www.leadershiparts.se Connect with Perfect Life: / perfect-life---high-performance https://www.perfectlife.se
