Boss SD-1 to OD-1 Modification and Demo. Featuring Benjamin Grudzinski on Guitar! In 1977 Boss unveiled the Compact series of pedals. These effects were the Green Boss Ph-1 Phaser ,The Yellow Boss OD-1 Overdrive and the red Boss SP-1 Spectrum. These first three Boss Compact pedals were synchronized to represent the colours of a traffic light. Creating the Traffic Light Trio These pedals were a great success As Boss has released several pedals in compact stomp form since then. Boss would commonly revise their most popular pedals to an ever growing audience That being said the next two pedals to try to take the spot of the Boss OD-1 was the od-2 in 1985 and od-3 in 1997. Even though they share the OD tittle these pedals have completely different circuits from each other. Before any more of the OD pedals were added, Boss released the SD-1 Super overdrive. This used a very similar circuit as the OD-1with the addition of a tone knob and more clean signal sustained, kinda like a tubescreamer. The SD-1 can still be bought today The Boss OD-1 circuit was revised due to the hazard of most of the R3403A Chips failing So in the Boss od-1’s lifetime of availability Boss changed the Quad op amp to a 8 pin dual op amp with the input output stage being carried by transistors rather than the quad op amp. That being said you could guess that earlier boss Overdrives are way more expensive on the used market. Like I said the Boss SD-1 is still available. And if you purchase a new SD-1 today you’ll find that the PCB has been changed to surface mount cooked on components that really don’t make a sonic difference, but they do have a cleaner bypass than the original earlier Boss OD-1 and SD-1 . More about the Boss OD-1 Overdrive It was he first ever Soft clipping overdrive that incorporates Asymmetrical clipping and inverts the signal after it is soft clipped by its 3 diodes in the earlier half of its op amp. The boss OD-1 has two knobs Level that sets the output of the circuit and Overdrive that reacts with the feedback loop of the soft clipping section of the op amp signal in correlation with the diodes. There is no tone control, there is a set fixed eq and by the distance of the knobs you can adjust how much high end you want to roll off as such. But that being said this isn’t your everyday tube screamer. The Boss OD-1 is a Overdrive Tube Simulator where you can change from clean to mid break up/ boost all by the click of a button So I guess the idea of the time was if you have tone control on an amp then the OD-1 doesn’t need a tone control. That being said there was a mild improvement to the boss OD-1 with the changing of its circuitry the later not so rare 8 pin jrc4558d version and 2 Transistors in place of the original chip. The older versions had a 14 pin Quad Op amp that would carry the duty of the later 2 transistors In the out put stage Since Boss Changed the circuitry while the OD-1 while it was in production for 10 years is no surprise to me that people on reverb and eBay are constantly hunting for a original 14 pin version which can be spotted cosmetically due to its silver screw and long dash model number. Boss Released the predecessor to OD1 with the release of the Boss SD-1 Super overdrive. The Boss Sd-1 has the same circuitry as the newer 8 pin chip OD-1 Pedals from the 80s But the SD-1 offered a Tubescreamer style Tone Pot with a little bit of circuity to allow players to roll off the highs while sustaining the same level and soft clipping distortion. Many purists swear on the notion that the SD-1 is just another Tube Screamer. But Asymmetrical clipping is more than enough to make the SD-1 and OD-1 be in a whole other realm of pedal category where as I like to think of asymmetrical overdrives as Tube amp Simulators. That being said the SD-1 and Tubescreamer both have a very mid focused sound with different eq response and a creamer amp like overdrive. When I say that the prices of classic OD-1’s have skyrocketed, I’m talking 1300-2000 CAD for an overdrive with a quad chip and funny bypass. Now lets say you don’t want to sell the farm to Drive the tractor, The Boss SD-1 has been in production since 1981. They are 90 dollars today new, which has kept the prices of malleable pinhole versions low enough that we can pick a SD-1 up for 50-200 bucks. Now Since the circuits of the OD-1 and SD-1 are so similar we can simply work around the circuit board to change the SD-1 Circuit to a Newer 8 pin dual op amp version of the od-1 In this video ill be performing the mods on a Black Label MIJ Boss SD-1 to match most of the specs to an older 14 pin quad op amp OD-1 The steps are fairly simple, unless you’re new to soldering and pinhole components this mod is a walk in the park.
