documentary 2024 www.adohamelryck.be As part of the archival project dedicated to the oeuvre of Ado Hamelryck—supported by Flanders Arts Heritage, ECRU, and the City of Genk—the team decided to produce a documentary focusing on the artist’s life and work. Film director Kaan Ilbas, who had already been involved in the research project, took on the direction of the film. Together with photographer Selma Gürbüz, he followed Ado Hamelryck from the very beginning of the process. They filmed him in his everyday environment: in his studio, while working, and in conversation with friends and fellow artists. The film captures not only his artistic practice, but also the person behind the work. Following the passing of Ado Hamelryck in the autumn of 2024, the original concept of the film had to be adapted. The focus shifted to conversations with fellow artists and contemporaries, who shared their experiences, reflections, and memories of Hamelryck. These testimonies now form a central element of the documentary. The result is a 22-minute biographical portrait, conceived in the spirit of the artist himself, with the artist’s home as a meaningful backdrop. The film stands as a restrained yet powerful homage to a rich and consistent artistic career. The documentary premiered during the finissage of Ado Hamelryck’s exhibition at De Uitstalling Art Gallery in Genk on 2 May 2025. Since then, it has also been screened as part of the tribute exhibition Black is a Colour at Gallery Sofie Van den Bussche (21 July – 26 August 2025). The documentary was made with the support of ECRU, the intermunicipal partnership for heritage and culture, and with the support of the City of Genk.
