What else can help a shortened cervix in addition to medication?

On the day you get pregnant your cervix is about the thickness of my finger and then around 28 weeks or so it starts to thin slightly. We don't want it to thin too much, too early because that could be a sign of a complication, specifically preterm labor. Your chance of preterm labor and delivery is higher if they've discovered that you have a shortened cervix and so chances are your doctor will watch you more closely during this pregnancy if you've been diagnosed with one. Now your doctor, you mentioned, recommended medication and you're wondering what you can do in addition to medication to strengthen your cervix. Unfortunately there isn't anything you can do to strengthen it or to get it to be thicker again but there are things you can do to prevent it from progressing further and to decrease your chances of preterm labor and delivery. Take the medication your doctor has prescribed to you and if they've recommended bed rest be sure to be compliant and do everything you can to follow their advice. Make and keep all of the appointments that your doctor wants you to have and they may recommend that you see a specialist called a perinatologist. They'll do regular testing to see if things are progressing or if your cervix is getting shorter. Other than that there's not much you can do.
