On December 6, 1917, the SS Mont-Blanc, a French cargo ship loaded with high explosives, and the SS Imo, a Norwegian vessel, collided in the Halifax Harbor. The collision and subsequent fire led to a massive explosion that devastated the city. The blast caused widespread destruction, leveling buildings, and resulted in a significant loss of life. Approximately 2,000 people were killed, and thousands more were injured. The explosion was so powerful that it caused a tsunami in the harbor and was felt as far away as 80 miles from the epicenter. The explosion is estimated to have been the equivalent of 2.9 kilotons of TNT, making it the largest artificial non-nuclear blast in history.
