In the last video, we sailed in choppy waters from St. John to Buck Island, St. Thomas. This Buck Island is 2 miles south of St. Thomas, different from the one with the same name at St. Croix. Buck island became National Wildlife Refuge due to is value for migratory birds and sea turtles. Coastline is rocky. Mooring sites are very close to the rocks. Extra care is needed. There is a historic lighthouse on the island, one of three Danish built lighthouses in the US Virgin Islands. Katie was prepping the lines to get ready to catch the mooring ball. However, the stern is really close to the rocks. With northeasterly wind blowing direct towards the shore, I don’t think I trust the mooring line that much. I am not comfortable to stay here for long. Shortly after the boat in front of us left, we picked up the mooring line and moved to its spot, further away from the rocks. This means that Katie got back to work, first release the bridle, then picked up a new mooring ball further away from the rocks. Sometimes, just an empty milk container attached to pendant. Job well done, Katie. Time to celebrate. Have the whole turtle cove to ourselves. What’s special about this turtle cove is that it has a few resident sea turtles inhabiting in this place year long. It’s quite easy to spot the turtles. Naturally they stay close to the shore. We have to swim to them. This is the first time I took a look at the boat below the water line. I have to say it’s not as pretty as above the water line. However, the current was too strong for me when I was in the water. On the top of that, I hand held the goPRO without attaching it to my wrist, Murphy’s law. The GoPRO dropped from my hand and went straight to the sea floor. Hence our day changed from swimming with turtles to rescue mission of GoPRO. Let’s find out where it is first. This is the mooring line. Here we go. The keels are only 3.67 feet, barely deeper than the rudders. Tomorrow’s gonna be a struggle sailing upwind. Unfortunately the water is about 20 feet deep. Too deep for me to free dive. Fortunately for us, a snorkeling boat from the Bolongo bay beach resort came. Its captain or team leader, a very kind gentleman offered help, picked up the GoPRO for us. We really appreciated it. Now everything was back on track. While we were relaxing and putting some food in our stomach, 2023 St. Thomas international regatta was passing Buck Island, right on time. Its sécurité announcement was on the radio all day. It’s very satisfying to watch the race up and front. After both snorkeling boats left, it’s our turn to say goodbye to Buck island. Tomorrow, we sailed to Megan’s bay beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Stay tuned. --------------------------------------------------------- Sailboat - 2022 Bali 4.2 ------------------------------------------------------------- Videos were shot by GoPRO HERO 9 ------------------------------------------------------------- Background music is licensed from Artlist Under the Waves created by Borrtex Empty created by Greg McKay Sueño created by Cristof Walters -------------------------------------------------------------
