Wide of Shiite pilgrims flagellating themselves STORYLINE: Thousands of Shiite Muslims across Iraq marked the holy day of Ashoura on Sunday, Shiite Islam''s most important religious holiday. As they did so authorities said a blast killed five pilgrims and wounded 15 in northeastern Iraq. A police official said Sunday morning''s bomb exploded in Tuz Khormato, north of Baghdad. Sunday was the climax of 10 days of commemorations marking the anniversary of the death Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad''s grandson, who died in a battle in 680 against the leader of what became the Sunni branch of Islam. The battle took place in the Iraqi city of Karbala. Ashoura includes processions and ceremonies, including self-flagellation, in a show of grief to mark Hussein''s death in battle, for leadership of the faith. Thousands of people gathered on the streets of the holy city of Karbala, many chanting and flagellating themselves with chains in mourning for the prophet. Portions of the Ashoura observance were banned under former dictator Saddam Hussein, who barred walking to Karbala and other rituals. Iraq''s government has deployed 25,000 security personnel in and around Karbala to protect the pilgrims. In Baghdad''s Shiite neighbourhood of Sadr city, men dressed in black beat drums as they walked in processions through the streets. Many used swords and daggers to beat the top of their heads to remember the suffering of Hussein, who was beheaded by his enemies.
