Did you know your next hotel booking could hide a scam? Listen to the shocking story of a MakeMyTrip customer who was overcharged and forced into a "compulsory gala dinner," leading to a massive court battle and an ₹85,000 penalty! Anuj and Archana Mahajan booked three rooms for two nights (December 30, 2018 - January 1, 2019) for eight people through the MakeMyTrip website. They saw a "superior room with breakfast" advertised for ₹3,419/-. However, their booking voucher shockingly listed each room at ₹6,370.94/-! Worse, it demanded an additional ₹3,500/- per person for a "compulsory gala dinner" payable directly at the hotel. The customers immediately emailed MakeMyTrip. Initially, MakeMyTrip admitted to the overcharge and even promised a refund for the gala dinner. A representative also confirmed over the phone that the issue would be resolved. But then, MakeMyTrip completely reneged, claiming the customer chose the wrong category and that the gala dinner on December 31, 2018, was mandatory. They argued they were merely a booking agent and not responsible for hotel policies. The hotel company (UP Hotels Limited) even failed to appear in court. The court meticulously reviewed the evidence, including website screenshots and emails. It sided with the customer, noting the discrepancy in prices displayed on the website versus the voucher, and the absence of any mention of a compulsory gala dinner in the chosen option. Crucially, MakeMyTrip's initial promise of a refund, which was never fulfilled, further highlighted their culpability. The court unequivocally declared the overcharging and mandatory gala dinner charge as "unfair trade practice" and a "deficiency in service." On April 1, 2025, the court ordered both MakeMyTrip and UP Hotels Limited to jointly refund the customer a total of ₹8,965/- (overcharge), ₹33,040/- (gala dinner), and ₹4,000/- (breakfast). Additionally, they must pay ₹40,000/- as compensation for mental harassment and litigation costs. All these amounts will accrue 6% interest from the date the legal notice was sent until payment, and must be settled within 45 days.
