Vivace non Troppo - 25:02 In memoriam: Paulo Gaio Lima (1961-2021) Born in Porto, Gaio Lima studied with Madalena Sá e Costa at the Porto Musical Conservatory and with Maurice Gendron at the National Superior Conservatory of Paris. He studied in Paris for seven years, supported by scholarships from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Portuguese Ministry of Culture. He performed regularly at music festivals in his country and the rest of Europe (Europalia- Brussels, Huddersfield, Marais, Uzès, Torino, Trento, Nantes) as well as with the orchestras of Moscow, Szeged, Shanghai, Porto Alegre, Hannover, Monterrey, Basel, Warsaw, Neuss, Istanbul and others. He collaborates with many contemporary music groups such as Alternance, 2E2M, L’Itinéraire, Poikilon, Musica Nova and Divertimento di Milano. He premiered works of Dusapin (Music 86 Strasbourg), Koo, the Concerto for Cello by Ph. Hersant (Huddersfield/89), and 5 Miniatures by C. Marecos (Cascais 2000). In 1987 he was principal guest cello of the Mulhouse Symphony Orchestra. From 1992 to 2000 he was the principal cello of the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra. He was part of the Verdi Paris Quartet. He formed the Artis Trio with Aníbal Lima and António Rosado with concerts in Denmark, France, Portugal and Italy. He recorded concertos of L. Boccherini, Beethoven (with G. Ribeiro and P. Burmester), Brahms (with G. Ribeiro), and Schumann, as well as works from the Portuguese chamber music repertoire (Pinho Vargas, C. Carneyro, Joly B. Santos) for EMI and RCA. His teaching activity was divided between the National Superior Orchestra Academy of Lisbon and the Superior Musical School of Lisbon. He also gave training courses and master classes across the country and in Spain, France, Austria, Brazil and the United States of America.
