(24 Jul 1999) Mandarin/Nat VOICED BY R.VAUGHAN An estimated 2,000 pro-China demonstrators marched through the streets of Taipei in protest at Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui's calls for Beijing and Taipei to deal with each other as one to one states. China has accused Lee of pushing for independence and of violating its "one-China" policy which maintains that Taiwan is a province of China and ruled by Beijing. Protesters in Taipei waved banners reading: "Make peace, Not war" and "Two-state equals Taiwan independence...or war". (0.02) As thousands of demonstrators took to the streets they had a simple message. (0.07) UPSOT "Make peace not war" (0.11) Thousands of Taiwanese were appalled by President Lee's recent assertion of Taiwan's statehood. His comments infuriated China and they responded with threats to invade the island. Beijing has often repeated its warning to storm the province if Taiwan declares formal independence. (0.26) Amid tight security the protestors demanded an end to the crisis. The impasse created by President Lee goes against the U-S's recognition of Taiwan and China as one country. Trying to defuse the crisis the U-S sent two emissaries to Beijing and Taipei. (0.41) UPSOT (0.47) In the meeting, Lee offered assurances that his policies of interaction and eventual reunification with the mainland haven't changed. Analysts expect military tensions to ease following the U.S. mediation. (0.58) Most hope that these demonstrations will not escalate and further complicate and already delicate diplomatic situation.
