#Sustainability #Biotechnology #Innovation #EENforSustainability Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH – Industrial biotechnology – Market success through innovative know-how The regional and national governments as well as the EU have pledged themselves to sustainability and resource conservation. But what does this mean for everyday corporate business? One answer to this question has come from Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH, an innovative biotechnology company that manufactures a unique natural raspberry flavour. Phytowelt, an NRW.Europa customer for many years, produces by fermentation 1 g of flavour from 1 kg of sugar – to extract the same quantity from actual raspberries would take 111 tons of fruit. Thanks to this innovation, the company has won the “Most Innovative European Biotech SME”-Award from BioEurope, among other prizes. “I was very surprised but also proud that we were selected as the SME Award winner. I am particularly pleased that our company, which has been in business for 20 years, was chosen from a large number of mostly far younger international companies as the most innovative in the Agra BioTech category. This award makes it clear that with our know-how we can help as pioneers to shape a new bioeconomy,” said a delighted Dr Peter Welters, CEO of Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH. That was in December 2018. The bio-based, natural raspberry flavouring (R-(alpha)-ionone), which Phytowelt produces with low energy input through bio-fermentation, is suitable for cosmetics and food products. What was still lacking, however, was someone able to manufacture and sell the product in larger quantities. This was where the internationalisation experts of the NRW.Europa team at ZENIT came into play. They have been supporting Phytowelt, which has its head office in Nettetal and a laboratory in Cologne, since 2003. Sometimes it was entries in the Enterprise Europe Network’s database that helped to find cooperation partners, sometimes it was participation in the matchmaking events organised by the Network that opened up new opportunities. The company has also participated in national and EU research projects with the help of the funding consultants in Mülheim and profited from their advice on the subject of digitalisation. In the framework of consulting services provided by ZENIT in the area of innovation management, a compact international market study on the topic of natural flavours was conducted. This included, among others, interviews with several manufacturers. One of the interview partners, the flavour company Axxence, was particularly delighted because he had been researching the topic himself for quite some time without success. Through the contact arranged by the NRW.Europa team, Phytowelt found in Axxence a partner with suitable international distribution channels who can also manufacture the product on a larger scale. Dr Peter Welters, Phytowelt’s managing director, is certain: “We definitely wouldn’t have found this distribution partner for our natural raspberry flavour so quickly without the interviews from the study conducted by the NRW.Europa team. And we would not have been able to bring to fruition a research project with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research without a workshop with them.” Cost savings and resource efficiency Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH was formed in 2006 from a merger of two companies: Phytowelt GmbH and GreenTech GmbH, which were both founded in 1998. With 25 employees, Phytowelt today operates as a manufacturer of high-quality flavours and as a contract developer. It develops production processes for flavours, active ingredients and fine chemicals on behalf of customers. The company’s second pillar is its green biotech division, which functions as a service provider for plant breeders and specialises in optimising the composition of ingredients in medicinal plants as well as crops . For these various industrial applications, the company combines molecular biology with plant biotechnology. In both business segments, Phytowelt pursues the same objective: “To develop the most sustainable production method for high-quality chemicals – in doing so, plants are our greatest source of inspiration!” Contact to: Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH Head Office Kölsumer Weg 33 41334 Nettetal Dr. Peter Welters Tel.: +49 (0) 2162-77859 Email: [email protected] www.phytowelt.com Contact to NRW.Europa: ZENIT GmbH / Enterprise Europe Network für Nordrhein-Westfalen NRW.Europa Benno Weißner Telefon: 0208 30004-59 E-Mail: [email protected] Astrid Pauli Telefon: 0208 30004-42 E-Mail: [email protected] www.zenit.de Video-Url: • #Biotechnology - Client Journey Phytowelt ...
