Interpreting the Bible: Paul & slavery | the question of Philemon

Two New Testament texts in particular have been considered critical to an understanding of Paul’s teaching concerning slavery; 1 Corinthians 7:21 and Philemon 15-16. Scholarship has long been divided on the question of whether or not Paul is saying slaves should seek any opportunity to be free.
