In plasma spraying between a cathode and a watercooled anode an arc discharge arises. Because of the high temperature in the arc the applied inert gas is ionized and forms a plasma. The temperature in the plasma (up to 20,000º c) can be selected by the use of specific process parameters. The spray material is in powder form when brought into plasma, after which it melts and is quickly sprayed onto the work piece. The high heat content and conductivity of the plasma flame along with the high transport speed of the molten particles provide optimum conditions in terms of strength, adhesion, uniformity and purity of the sprayed layer.
