Fugitive Recovery Agents in Colorado – How Bounty Hunters Work In this video, attorney Michael Becker with the Colorado Legal Defense Group explains how fugitive recovery agents—commonly known as bounty hunters—operate in Colorado, what their legal powers are, and what rights you have if you're being pursued by one. When a person is released from jail on a bail bond and fails to appear in court, the bail bondsman is at risk of losing the full bail amount. To recover that money, bondsmen hire fugitive recovery agents to locate and arrest the person who skipped court. If successful, the agent earns a commission, typically 10% to 20% of the bail amount. Bounty hunters in Colorado are not law enforcement officers. They are private agents who perform citizen's arrests. They can lawfully break into your home if your bond contract permits it, but they cannot force entry into third-party residences or violate trespass laws. Doing so can result in criminal charges like burglary. Unlike many professions, bounty hunters in Colorado are not required to be licensed or certified. However, most bonding companies require agents to be 18 or older, U.S. citizens or residents, pass a background check, and complete training. Many bounty hunters are former police officers, security guards, or private investigators. If you're facing bail-related issues or think a bounty hunter is after you, contact us immediately.
