Thompson Test - Clinical Examination
The Thompson Test is a technique designed to exam a suspected rupture of the Achilles tendon. To properly complete this test, the patient should lie in a proned position with the feet hanging over the edge of the bed. The tricep sure muscle and the achilles tendon which arises from it should be inspected and palpated for indentation, swelling or hematoma, which indicate rupture. The Thompson Test is considered positive for an achilles tendon rupture when squeezing the tricep sure muscle does not elicit plantar flexion of the same foot.
