Atlanta, Georgia is the capital of the state of Georgia and is the 37th most populous city in the United States with a little less than 507,000 residents. Atlanta is situated among the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and has the highest elevation of any major city east of the Mississippi River. Atlanta or what some refer as The City in the Forest is part of the 9th largest metropolitan area in the nation with more than 6 million residents in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Atlanta is also the county seat of the county of Fulton County but the city extends into Dekalb County. Atlanta was first named Terminus. Later it was named Thrasherville. Then in 1842 - when Thrasherville had 6 buildings and 30 residents - the residents renamed the city " Marthasville" in honor of Governor Wilson Lumpkin's daughter. Later John Edgar Thompson, Chief Engineer of the Georgia Railroad suggested that the city be renamed "Atlanta". Atlanta was named because it represented the "Atlantic" in the Western & Atlantic Railroad. The residents approved the name and the town was incorporated in 1847. The Gate City or Hollywood of the South was founded as the terminus of a major state sponsored railroad in 1837. The city was almost burnt completely down during the civil war. But it rose up quickly and now has become one of the 50 largest cities in the United States.
