Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on Wednesday (February 18) that she will “vigorously pursue” her election pledges, including the revision of Japan’s pacifist constitution. Speaking at a press conference, Takaichi said that her party's landslide victory in a snap election earlier this month indicates that the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has the support to push through “important policy shifts” including strengthening security policies, and enhancing the government's intelligence capabilities. Takaichi's LDP won a landslide 316 of the 465 seats in parliament's lower house in a snap election on February 8, giving her a solid mandate to push through big spending and promised tax relief. Japan's first female premier, a conservative who said she draws inspiration from Britain's "Iron Lady" Margaret Thatcher is already accelerating defence spending to bring it to a record 2% of gross domestic product by the end of March. She has also pledged to ease restrictions on arms exports and allow Japan to pursue joint defence equipment projects with other countries. Her administration plans to formulate a new national security strategy, likely by year end, that would further accelerate military spending. With more than a two-thirds majority in the lower house, she could table an amendment to Japan's pacifist constitution to formally recognise the Self-Defence Forces as a military. Any such change would still require a two-thirds majority in the upper house - which she does not currently control - and approval in a national referendum. #sanaetakaichi #japanpolitics #japannews #usjapan #trump #cnbctv18
