about this video "The Best Water gardening Idea । How to Grow Aquatic Plants in Water Garden" I just love aquatic plants! Most of my gardens have not had large water features which is why I love visiting gardens with impressive collections. Today we're hopping into the pond with Jim Smith of the Atlanta Botanical Garden to discuss everything from plant selections to success in growing aquatic plants. In this episode - Jim wasn't kidding when he said we were going to get up close and personal with aquatic plants today. He handed me a pair of hip waders and hopped right in! First we talked through a number of the broader categories of aquatic plants that you are likely to find. One of the best known plants is the water lily (Nymphaea) and here at the Botanical garden they have both the hardy Nymphaea which are typically lighter peach and pastel colors (a great cultivar Jim showed me was 'Texas Dawn' that is bright yellow with a lemony scent.) and the tropical Nymphaea that sport the bold bright reds and purple flowers along with occasional variegated foliage are thriving in Jim's pond. One super impressive cultivar was the fragrant deep fuchsia 'Mayla'. One of the queens of the water is the Lotus (Nelumbo) and we were lucky enough to see the amazing Nelumbo nucifera 'Perry's Giant Sunburst' in all of its glory. Next we discussed the category of marginal plants which are the water loving species that thrive in more shallow water along the ponds edge. A couple of great selections of marginal plants are Equisetum scirpoides and Iris pallida 'Variegata' both prized for their beautiful and unusual foliage. In this installation the plants are all planted in containers that have a blend of sand and heavy clay. The containers help keep the plants contained as well as giving them an anchor in the pond. Before we left Jim shared with me another great tip they employ at ABG which is using a black dye in the water. Not only does it make the pond look great, it also gives the fish in the pond some cover so that they aren't eaten by birds. It also helps cut down on algae growth by limiting sunlight in the water. What a great day!
