Presenters: Rebecca Allen (Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery), Angela Burton (Detroit Recovery Project), and Joey Supina (Sandusky Artisans Recovery Community Center) RCC Live Feature: Lesley Pregenzer (FAVOR Upstate) In this seminar, which is part of our NIDA-funded effort to advance the science on RCCs, we will explore RCC longevity. RCCs grew out of the new recovery advocacy movement in America, which began in the late 1990s. In 1998, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) funded recovery programs in its first round of the Recovery Community Support Program (RCSP). Since then, many things have happened. How do RCCs navigate these changes over time? In what ways have RCCs changed from their original vision when they first opened their doors to their operating procedures today? To gain insight into these questions, Dr. Bettina Hoeppner will lead a moderated discussion with representatives from three ‘legacy’ RCCs, which were funded in the first round of SAMHSA’s RCSP: Ms. Rebecca Allen (CCAR, founded 20 years ago), Ms. Angela Burton (DRP, founded 20 years ago), and Mr. Joey Supina (SARRC, founded 30 years ago). Together, they will discuss how their RCC’s service model is the same/different today vs. when they first started, what their pivotal challenges were and how they overcame them, and how new ideas/directions emerged over time and came to shape their RCC.
