READ MORE: https://www.news.com.au/travel/travel... Eight back-country skiers have been found dead and one remains missing after a devastating avalanche struck in the mountains of Northern California. The tragedy unfolded in extreme blizzard conditions near Castle Peak, north of Boreal Mountain Ski Resort, leaving families and rescuers in shock. According to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, 15 skiers were on the guided trip when the avalanche hit around 11.30am local time. Six people were rescued alive, with two taken to hospital for treatment, while a massive search operation involving highly trained ski teams continues. Authorities said brutal weather has made rescue efforts extremely dangerous, with gale-force winds, deep snow and near zero visibility hampering crews. The National Weather Service warned parts of the Sierra Nevada could see more than two metres of additional snowfall and winds up to 90km/h. The avalanche was rated 2.5 by the Sierra Avalanche Center, meaning it was powerful enough to bury or kill a person. Experts had already issued “high” avalanche danger warnings before the incident. The group, guided by Blackbird Mountain Guides, had been staying in remote huts and were returning to base when the disaster struck. Rescue teams from Tahoe Donner’s Alder Creek Adventure Centre were deployed as part of the emergency response. Officials have now shifted from rescue to recovery as hopes fade. Reports from CBS and New York Post say it is the deadliest avalanche in the United States in more than 40 years. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Connect With news.com.au Online ► [https://www.news.com.au] https://bit.ly/3WC8hOP ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Follow Us: Facebook ► [ / news.com.au ] Instagram ► [https://www.instagram.com/newscomauhq...] TikTok ► [@news.com.au] X ► [ / newscomauhq ] ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Subscribe To Our YouTube Channel For The Very Latest News From Australia And Around The World: ► [ / @newscomauhq ] ► [ / @newscomauhq ] ► [ / @newscomauhq ] ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
