The Inca Empire existed from 1438 to 1572, and it's known for many things - terraced agriculture, it's impressive road system, its walls built without mortar, and of course... mummies. Let's take a look at the Inca Empire and their religious practices - including capacocha, the practice of sacrificing children and leaving them to mummify on mountain peaks. One famous mummy in particular, found on and named after Mount Llullaillaco in Chile, gives us a lot of archaeological and historical evidence about Inca capacocha and human sacrifice. She was found alongside "lightning girl" and "the boy," and the three are some of the most remarkably preserved Inca mummies we have. So how did this teenage girl end up on top of a mountain, thousands of miles from home, with coca leaves still in her mouth? And who covered her up once she died?
