After a two-year hiatus, this Estonian act reenters the black metal scene with a record. From the very start, this record unfolds as an invocation, similarly as the debut with a ritual ambient track. Hasswald has deftly broadened its musical palette, moving away from the blend of lo-fi and atmospheric textures of their previous outing and embracing a more refined yet no less ferocious black metal aesthetic. The cleaner production allows both the crushing aggression and the moments of surprising harmonious clarity to coexist in a dynamic interplay. Occasional clean vocals introduce an unexpected nuance, enriching the traditionally abrasive framework with a layer of accessibility reminiscent of the spirited energy found in the work of bands like Triumph, Genus, albeit executed with a unique, harmonically intricate fury.
