How the Anderton Boat Lift and Marsh Lock failures are isolating the River Weaver. This week I cruised down to Northwich Drydock to speak directly to the owners about how the ongoing closure of the Anderton Boat Lift — now made even worse by the failure of Marsh Lock — has affected their business. With both structures out of action, the River Weaver is now completely cut off from the rest of the network, leaving boaters and local waterways businesses stranded. Northwich Drydock is a rare and vital heritage service, offering traditional boat maintenance, repair skills and historic knowledge that you simply can’t replace once it’s gone. Hearing first-hand how work has disappeared because boats physically can’t reach them was genuinely heartbreaking. This isn’t just a navigation inconvenience — it’s livelihoods, craftmanship, and the future of the river.
