"𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗮" is one of the most famous chansons of the XVth century. With its graceful yet sorrowful character, this song about desperate fortune becames one of the most widely circulated melodies of the Renaissance, admired for its balance of elegance and melancholy. In the XVth century, melancholy was more than a passing mood. Rooted in medieval humoral theory, it was understood as a complex intellectual and artistic condition - a “divine affliction” associated with Saturn, contemplation, and creative brilliance. Renaissance audiences recognized in "Fortuna desperata" not only personal despair, but a deeper reflection on fate, instability, and the fragile nature of human fortune. Several composers engaged creatively with this melody, among them Alexander Agricola. His setting preserves the three original voices of the chanson while adding three new ones, generating striking rhythmic complexity and harmonic daring. Agricola’s version reveals a fascination with the structural potential of the material, transforming a well-known song into a dense and expressive polyphonic landscape.
